How to add a watermark
to a PDF.
A watermark marks ownership and travels with the file. It does not stop anyone from copying the document, and pretending otherwise is how people end up sending a draft they meant to keep quiet.
Short answer: use the PDF watermarking tool. The watermark is real text drawn into every page, so it stays sharp and can be searched like any other text — and, for the same reason, anyone can select it and delete it. We measured the cost on a three-page PDF: 2,520 → 2,831 bytes (+12,3 %) with one mark in the centre, and +128 % when tiled across the pages (84 copies).
Written by the Tool Pantry team on 22 October 2026. The numbers come from running the real watermarking tool in a browser on a purpose-built three-page PDF, then reading the output back to check the file size and to confirm the watermark is extractable text. For the difference between a visible signature and a certified one, see our PDF signing guide.
How the watermark is actually written
The watermark is real text drawn into the PDF, not a picture pasted over the top. The tool draws it with a vector font on every page, so it stays sharp at any zoom and — this is the part that matters — it can be selected, copied and searched like any other text in the document.
That is a deliberate trade-off. A raster watermark is harder to scrape but looks blurry and is heavier; a text watermark looks professional and weighs almost nothing, but it is a label, not a lock.
What it costs your file
We took a three-page PDF and watermarked it both ways, then compared sizes:
| Mode | File size | Change | Copies drawn |
|---|---|---|---|
| One in the centre | 2,831 bytes | +12.3 % | 3 (one per page) |
| Tiled across the page | 5,748 bytes | +128 % | 84 (28 per page) |
Tiling multiplies the weight by more than two, because every copy is another text-drawing instruction in the page content. On a 50-page document that gap grows, and it is worth knowing before you tile something large.
Why a watermark is not protection
Since the watermark is text, anyone with a PDF editor can select that text and delete it, or cover it with a white rectangle. No text watermark resists that, and ours does not pretend otherwise.
What a watermark does do is real and useful:
- It marks ownership. A document that says “CONFIDENTIAL” or your name on every page is much harder to pass off as someone else’s.
- It survives forwarding. The mark travels with the file, which is more than a note in the body text would do.
- It tells a reader what to do with it without a separate cover letter.
If you need to stop people from copying content, that is a different job: it needs permissions and encryption, not a picture of your name.
The settings that matter
| Control | Effect | What we would set |
|---|---|---|
| Text | The words themselves | “CONFIDENTIAL”, your name, or a date |
| Opacity | How faint the text is | 10–30 % so the text underneath stays readable |
| Angle | How the text is turned | 45°, the diagonal that is hardest to crop around |
| Position | Centre or tiled | Tiled for a draft, centre for a cover page |
| Size | Font size | Large enough to read at a glance, small enough to stay out of the way |
The limits, plainly
- It does not stop copying. Text can be selected, copied and deleted.
- It is added to every page. There is no “first page only” option; watermarking a cover sheet means watermarking the whole file.
- The file grows. +12 % centred, +128 % tiled on our test.
- It does not remove an existing watermark. It adds a layer; it is not a cleaner.
How do I add a watermark to a PDF?
Open the PDF watermarking tool, choose your file, type the text, set the opacity, angle and position, and press Apply. The watermark is drawn as real text into every page and the file downloads from the same tab — nothing is uploaded.
Is a watermark protection?
No. Ours is real text, which means it can be selected, copied and deleted by anyone with a PDF editor. A watermark marks ownership and travels with the file; it does not prevent copying. Stopping people from copying content needs permissions and encryption instead.
How much bigger does the file get?
On our three-page test PDF (2,520 bytes), one watermark in the centre took it to 2,831 bytes (+12.3 %). Tiled across the pages it reached 5,748 bytes (+128 %), because each copy is another drawing instruction.
Can I watermark only the first page?
Not with this tool — the watermark goes on every page. If you only need a cover page marked, cropping or splitting the PDF first and watermarking the part you want gives you that.
Does it remove an existing watermark?
No. It adds a layer of text on top. Removing a watermark means editing the original file in a PDF editor.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The watermark is drawn in your browser and the file is downloaded from the same tab.
