The dates that are
not negotiable.
Holiday shipping has two kinds of dates: the ones everyone copies from a list, and the two that actually decide whether a package arrives. Both matter. Here are the 2026 cutoffs for USPS, FedEx and UPS, and the closure days that catch people out every year.
Short answer: for delivery before December 25, 2026, USPS wants your parcel in by December 17 (Ground Advantage, First-Class), December 18 (Priority Mail) or December 19 (Priority Mail Express) if it is going to the contiguous US. FedEx Ground closes on December 18. International mail goes much earlier — December 9 for USPS Priority Mail International — and military addresses earlier still, November 4 for Ground Advantage.
By the Tool Pantry team, October 2026. Every date below was read from the carrier's own published page on October 21, 2026: usps.com/holiday/holiday-shipping-dates.htm, fedex.com/en-us/holiday/last-days-to-ship.html and ups.com holiday schedule. Carrier schedules change; the carriers themselves say to re-check as the season approaches.
USPS — send-by dates for delivery before December 25
For the contiguous United States (the lower 48 states):
| Service | Send by |
|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | Thursday, December 17, 2026 |
| First-Class Mail | Thursday, December 17, 2026 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, December 18, 2026 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, December 19, 2026 |
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US territories get a different table, and the first row is the one people miss: Ground Advantage to or from Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands expects a 10-day service or more, so the send-by date is earlier. USPS also notes that Hanukkah falls early this year (December 4–12, 2026), so if a gift is for that holiday, plan around the earlier date rather than Christmas.
USPS — international and military
- First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International: Wednesday, December 9, 2026 for every international destination listed (Africa, Asia/Pacific, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, Mexico, Middle East).
- Priority Mail Express International: Wednesday, December 16, 2026.
- Military mail is earlier again: Ground Advantage to APO/FPO/DPO addresses goes by November 4, First-Class and Priority by December 9, Express by December 16.
FedEx — last day to ship
FedEx publishes a grid keyed on transit time, which is more precise than a single date. For delivery by December 24, 2026:
| Service | Last day to ship |
|---|---|
| FedEx Ground / Home Delivery | Friday, December 18, 2026 (4-day transit) |
| FedEx 2Day | Wednesday, December 23, 2026 |
| FedEx SameDay | Thursday, December 24, 2026 |
| FedEx International Economy / Connect Plus | Monday, December 21, 2026 |
| FedEx International Priority / First | Tuesday, December 22, 2026 |
| FedEx International Next Flight (Canada, Mexico) | Tuesday, December 22, 2026 |
Two operational details: FedEx offices are closed December 24–25 and December 31–January 1, and international deadlines do not include time for customs clearance, so add transit days for anything outside a major city.
UPS — the two closure days people miss
UPS is closed on New Year's Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. For this season that means:
- Thursday, November 26 — Thanksgiving: UPS holiday. UPS Store locations may be closed.
- Friday, November 27 — the day after Thanksgiving: also an observed UPS holiday, so no UPS Ground pickup and UPS Store hours may be reduced.
- Thursday, December 24: UPS pickup for Air and international Air services only, and only if prearranged by December 18. No UPS Ground pickup.
- Thursday, December 31: Air and international Air pickup only if prearranged by December 28. No UPS Ground pickup, and no UPS Ground delivery.
UPS Express Critical stays available year-round through Marken, including on those days. The general rule from UPS is the one worth keeping: allow extra time in the busy period, because last-minute changes are what cause missed deliveries.
The two dates that decide it
Most of the tables above are the same every year, and the same mistake gets made every year too.
- The send-by date is not the same as the last pickup. A carrier can accept a package on December 20 and still miss Christmas if the service is Ground. The date that matters is the one for your specific service, from the carrier's own table.
- Retailers cut off earlier than carriers do. A retailer has to receive, pick, pack and hand off the parcel — so its own order cutoff is days before the carrier's. Those dates live on the retailer's page, not the carrier's.
To know how many days you actually have left, the time duration calculator gives you the count from today to any date — and it is worth doing it now rather than in December.
The file side: what you are actually shipping
A holiday shipment is usually a PDF, not a photograph: a shipping label, a packing slip, a returns policy, a gift card, a catalogue. Those files get emailed, and they get emailed badly.
- Shipping labels and packing slips are generated as PDFs and attached to an order confirmation. A multi-page label pack from a print driver can be several megabytes, and the email carrying it is the part that gets rejected. Our Compress PDF tool shrinks it in the browser, so the document never reaches a third-party server to be squeezed.
- Gift cards and product photos are images, and the ones that come from a supplier are frequently 2–5 MB each. Our image compressor handles the whole batch, with a ZIP download at the end. For a form that wants a specific ceiling, the compress to 100 KB and to 500 KB tools hit an exact target — our measured numbers for a 4.6 MB image are in the Black Friday 2026 guide.
- Seasonal catalogues are the worst case. A 40-page price list exported from a design tool is frequently 5–10 MB, and it gets attached to email and uploaded to a portal in the same week. Compress it once, then reuse the small file everywhere.
All of this runs locally, which matters for the order confirmation and the packing slip specifically — those documents carry customer names and addresses, and there is no reason for them to be uploaded to a converter to get smaller.
What this guide is not
- Not a promise. Every carrier says the same thing: actual delivery depends on origin, destination, acceptance time and conditions, and schedules can change. This is the published schedule, not a guarantee.
- Not a retailer list. Order cutoffs, in-stock handling and shipping minimums are set per retailer and are often stricter than the carrier's.
- Not a tool for tracking. We do not track packages. For that, the carrier's own site is the source.
What is the last day to ship with USPS Ground Advantage for Christmas 2026?
Thursday, December 17, 2026 for the contiguous United States, for expected delivery before December 25. First-Class Mail is also December 17, Priority Mail is December 18 and Priority Mail Express is December 19. International mail goes much earlier: December 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International, December 16 for Priority Mail Express International.
Is UPS open on Black Friday 2026?
UPS is closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026. November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, is an observed UPS holiday, so UPS Store locations may be closed and there is no UPS Ground pickup. UPS Express Critical remains available through Marken.
When does the US Postal Service stop accepting mail for Christmas?
For the contiguous United States, USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail should be mailed by December 17, 2026, Priority Mail by December 18 and Priority Mail Express by December 19, for delivery before December 25. International mail needs to go by December 9, and military mail much earlier — November 4 for Ground Advantage.
