## About

Pull the audio out of any video file — decoded by your browser, encoded to MP3 at your chosen bitrate. Files only, no links, nothing uploaded.

## Quick answer

How do I convert a video to MP3? Add the file, pick 192 kbps (the safe default), and press Convert to MP3. Decoding and encoding happen in your browser — no upload, no account, no watermark. This works on files you have; it does not take YouTube links.

## How the conversion works

Your browser already contains the codecs that play videos — AAC for MP4, Opus for WebM. This tool hands the file to that same decoder (through the Web Audio API), gets raw PCM audio back, and encodes it to MP3 with the LAME encoder compiled to JavaScript. Nothing goes to a server; you can watch the Network tab stay silent.

## Bitrate: what to pick

- **128 kbps** — small files, podcasts and voice; fine for speech, slightly dull for music
- **192 kbps** — the default for a reason: transparent for most listeners, about 1.4 MB per minute
- **320 kbps** — maximum MP3 quality, about 2.4 MB per minute; only worth it if the source audio is high quality to begin with

One honest note: if the source is already compressed (say AAC at 128 kbps), converting to MP3 320 kbps doesn't add quality — it just stops the re-encode from making things worse. Match the source's level, don't exceed it by much.

## What this tool won't do

It won't take a YouTube, TikTok, or Spotify link — only files on your device. Link downloading violates those platforms' terms, and any site promising it is doing something the law frowns on. If you recorded the video yourself (our [screen recorder](https://toolpantry.app/screen-recorder.html) saves WebM locally), converting it here is completely fine.

## After the conversion

MP3 files don't carry metadata beyond ID3 tags — none are written here. If you need a ringtone-length clip, trim the MP3 in any player; if you need the video itself smaller, the [video compressor](https://toolpantry.app/compress-video.html) does that next door. Photos with hidden data? The [EXIF viewer](https://toolpantry.app/exif-viewer.html) handles those.

## Notes

Long videos take a few seconds per minute of audio to encode — the progress field shows where it is. Files over roughly an hour are better handled on a computer than a phone: decoding loads the whole audio into memory.

## FAQ

**How do I convert a video to MP3?**

Add a video file (MP4, MOV, WebM, M4A), pick a bitrate — 192 kbps is the safe default — and press Convert. Your browser decodes the audio and encodes MP3 locally; nothing is uploaded.

**Can it convert a YouTube link?**

No — and we deliberately don't do links. This tool works on files you already have on your device. Downloading from streaming platforms is against their terms, and we're not going near it.

**Does converting to MP3 lose quality?**

If the source audio is already compressed (AAC or Opus), MP3 re-compresses it once. At 192 kbps or higher that's fine for listening. For archiving, keep the original file.

**Which formats are supported?**

Whatever your browser can play: MP4 and MOV (AAC), WebM (Opus), M4A audio. MKV and some exotic codecs may fail — the tool tells you when it can't decode a file.
