## About

Generative editing is about changing part of an image without regenerating all of it: remove an object, extend the frame, replace the sky. The tools differ in how much control they give you over the rest of the picture.

## Tools

- **[Adobe Firefly](https://www.adobe.com/products/firefly.html)** (Hosted, Licensed data) — Generative fill and expand inside Adobe’s ecosystem, trained on licensed content — the reason many studios allow it.
- **[Krea](https://www.krea.ai/)** (Hosted, Real-time) — A canvas that regenerates as you draw. Good for exploring a direction quickly rather than finishing one image.
- **[Clipdrop](https://clipdrop.co/)** (Hosted, One-click) — Cleanup, background replacement and uncrop as separate single-purpose tools, which is often all a product photo needs.
- **[Canva](https://www.canva.com/)** (Hosted, Templates) — Edits live inside a design system with templates and brand assets. The right shape when the output is a social post, not a raw file.
- **[Photopea](https://www.photopea.com/)** (Free, Manual) — Layer-based editing in the browser, free. Everything the AI tools are trying to replace, when precision matters more than speed.
- **[Add text to a photo](https://toolpantry.app/add-text-to-photo)** (Tool Pantry, Local) — Puts text on an image in the browser with nothing uploaded. For labels and captions this beats an AI edit.

## FAQ

**When should I not use generative fill?**

Anywhere the image is evidence: products in a claim, insurance, journalism. Inpainted pixels are generated, not photographed.

**Does generative fill keep the rest of the image intact?**

Mostly. Look closely at the boundary — some tools shift grain or colour just outside the selection.

**What is uncrop?**

Extending the canvas beyond the original frame with generated content. Useful for changing the aspect ratio for a different channel.
